How COVID fast-tracked digital transformation
At the beginning of 2020, most companies were progressing along a path that felt relatively predictable.
Cloud adoption was increasing, collaboration platforms were expanding, and migration programmes were continuing at a steady pace. Systems were being modernised, often in phases, with time set aside for planning, testing, and adjustment. There was a sense of direction, and in many cases, a reasonable degree of control over how that direction would be followed.
That changed remarkably quickly. As the global COVID-19 pandemic took hold, companies were required to shift large parts of their operations away from offices and into remote environments. This was not a gradual transition – in many cases, it happened over the course of a frantic few days, supported by whatever systems and processes were already in place.
Cloud adoption becomes business-critical
The impact on technology was immediate. Cloud platforms became central to maintaining business continuity. Tools such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom moved from being useful additions to essential components of daily work. Communication, collaboration, and access to information all depended on systems that could operate reliably outside traditional network boundaries.
The shift was most visible in how people worked. Meetings that had previously taken place in person moved online. Conversations that might have happened informally became scheduled calls or persistent chat threads. Documents were shared and edited in real time, often across different locations and time zones. The boundaries between office and remote work blurred, and in many cases, disappeared entirely.
Why accurate data became the remote-work priority
This environment placed significant emphasis on data, and especially accurate data. Information needed to be available to users regardless of where they were working. Systems that had previously relied on local access or network proximity needed to support remote connections at scale. Performance, reliability, and security all became critical factors, often under conditions that had not been fully anticipated.
Companies that had already invested in Cloud-based systems and structured data management were better positioned to respond. Their information was accessible, their platforms were designed to support distributed access, and their processes were more adaptable to change.
For others, the transition was more challenging. Legacy systems, fragmented data estates, and incomplete migration efforts became more visible when access was required from outside established environments. In some cases, this led to rapid decisions to accelerate migration programmes or to implement temporary solutions that could support immediate needs.
Data migration at speed, without losing control
Transvault’s work during this period reflected these pressures. Migration activities that might previously have been scheduled over extended periods were often brought forward. The requirement was not only to move data, but to do so in a way that supported immediate access without compromising accuracy. Even under time constraints, the integrity of the data remained essential.
This balance between speed and control was a consistent theme. Data needed to be available quickly, but it also needed to remain complete and reliable. Missing or inconsistent information could have immediate operational consequences, particularly when teams were working remotely and relying on shared systems for coordination.
Collaboration platforms create a new data challenge
At the same time, the volume of data being generated continued to increase. Remote working introduced new patterns of communication. Meetings were recorded, chat histories accumulated, and documents were created and shared at a higher frequency. Collaboration platforms became central repositories for this activity, capturing information that might previously have been more transient.
Managing this data effectively required both technical capability and clear processes. Access needed to be controlled, retention policies needed to be applied, and information needed to remain accessible over time. The governance frameworks that had been developed in earlier years were tested under these conditions, and in many cases, reinforced.
Remote work becomes the new normal
By the end of 2020, it had become clear that the changes introduced during this period were not temporary. Companies had demonstrated that large-scale remote working was possible, and in many cases, effective. Employees had adapted to new ways of working, and expectations had shifted accordingly. The idea that work needed to be tied to a specific location became less relevant.
This led to a period of adjustment in 2021. Rather than reacting to immediate disruption, companies began to consider how their systems should be structured to support a more flexible model over the longer term. This included reviewing how data was managed, how access was controlled, and how collaboration platforms were used.
Cloud infrastructure remained central to these considerations. It provided the foundation for distributed work, supporting access from multiple locations and enabling systems to scale as required. At the same time, it required careful management to ensure that performance, security, and compliance were maintained.
Building a cloud-first operating model
Transvault continued to support companies as they adapted to this environment. Ensuring that data could be moved, structured, and accessed effectively remained a key requirement. Migration was not limited to initial transitions, but continued as systems were refined and updated to support new working patterns.
By the end of 2021, the way companies approached work had changed in a lasting way. Remote access, flexible working, and reliance on Cloud-based systems were no longer temporary measures. They had become part of standard operations, influencing how decisions were made and how systems were designed.
This, however, raised a new set of questions. If work was no longer tied to a single location, and systems needed to support a range of environments, how could companies maintain consistency and control across those environments?
