Team Spotlight – Tom Ramsay’s Journey into Product Ownership

At Transvault, our products are only as strong as the people who shape them. Through our Team Spotlight series, we’re highlighting the individuals whose experience, curiosity, and dedication continue to drive our success. This time, we’re shining the spotlight on Tom Ramsay, Product Owner, who has spent nearly 15 years at Transvault building the kind of deep product knowledge that only comes from working across almost every layer of the business.

From Building PCs to Building Products

Tom’s interest in technology started long before his career did. “I’ve always been fascinated by computers,” he explains. “My uncle introduced me to building and upgrading PCs when I was younger, and that quickly became a hobby.”

That early curiosity led him to study Computer Science at Aberystwyth University, graduating in 2008. He began his career in Technical Support at Essential Computing before joining Transvault in December 2011, initially in a Technical Support role.

What followed was a career built through genuine progression. Over nearly 15 years, Tom moved through Technical Account Management and Technical Specialist roles before stepping into Product Ownership, a journey that has given him a perspective on Transvault’s products that is difficult to replicate.

Growing with Transvault

Having been part of the team through significant periods of growth and change, Tom has watched both the company and the industry evolve in ways few people have had the chance to see up close.

“Having been here for so long, I’ve been able to see both the company and the industry evolve,” he says. “I enjoy solving complex problems and working with people across different teams to improve our products. It’s rewarding to see ideas come from customer feedback, move through development, and become features that benefit everyone.”

That progression from customer-facing technical roles into Product Ownership was a natural one. “I’ve always enjoyed understanding how systems work and finding practical solutions to problems. This role lets me combine technical knowledge with close collaboration across the business. I enjoy taking complex technical challenges and turning them into improvements that deliver real value for our customers.”

Values That Drive Better Products

One of the most important lessons Tom has taken from his time at Transvault is also one of the simplest.

“I’ve learned not to jump to conclusions,” he says. “The first explanation or solution often isn’t the right one. Taking the time to understand the wider context nearly always leads to better outcomes.”

It’s a principle that shapes the way he approaches product decisions and customer challenges alike, and one that speaks to a broader commitment to doing things properly rather than quickly.

What the Role Actually Looks Like

No two days in Tom’s role are exactly the same. A typical day might involve refining user stories, working with developers to clarify requirements, investigating technical issues, improving documentation, helping colleagues with product questions, or joining customer discussions where his product expertise can help move a project forward.

“No two days are exactly the same, which is one of the things I enjoy,” he says.

Life Outside of Work

That same focus on long-term progress and discipline extends well beyond the office. Tom has pursued bodybuilding for many years, finding in it a structure that carries across into other areas of his life.

“I enjoy setting long-term goals and seeing steady progress over time,” he explains. “The discipline and patience it teaches has had a positive impact on other areas of my life, including work.”

Outside the gym, Tom spends his time cooking, gaming, and keeping up with the latest developments in technology, a habit that has been with him since childhood and shows no sign of fading.

Excited by What Comes Next

When it comes to the future, Tom’s focus is firmly on what AI can practically deliver for customers rather than the broader noise surrounding it.

“AI is changing the way we all work, but what interests me most is how we can apply new technology in practical ways to improve our products and solve real customer problems more effectively.”

His advice for anyone starting out reflects the same grounded curiosity that has defined his own career.

“Stay curious. Don’t just learn how something works, try to understand why it works that way. Even when the learning curve feels steep, building a strong technical foundation and asking the right questions will take you much further than simply memorising information.”

We’re proud to have Tom as part of the Transvault team. His technical depth, considered approach, and nearly 15 years of experience are a reflection of the kind of expertise and commitment that has always set Transvault apart.
