Team Spotlight – James Moody’s journey into Sales

At Transvault, we are passionate about what we do, but that passion is only possible because of the people who make up our team. As we celebrate 20 years of Transvault, we’re reflecting not only on the company’s journey, but also on the people who have helped shape it along the way. Through our Team Spotlight series, we’re highlighting the individuals whose experiences, dedication, and expertise continue to drive our success.

There could be no better person to spotlight during this milestone year than James, who is also celebrating 20 years with the business. Having been part of the journey from the very beginning, James has witnessed the company evolve from an idea into the global organisation it is today. His story is closely woven into the history of Transvault itself.

From Civil Engineering to IT Sales

Despite a fascination with computers from an early age, technology wasn’t James’ first career path. “I had a keen interest in computers as a child,” he recalls. “I even went without school dinners for quite a long time so I could save the money to buy a ZX81.”

His first role, however, was far removed from software and IT. He began his career working in land surveying and civil engineering. But after spending long days working outdoors in harsh conditions on piled foundations at Portbury Docks, he realised it was time for a change. “After a series of particularly cold, wet, and physically demanding days, I decided enough was enough,” he says. “I took a job with a small software company selling report-writing software for AS400 machines on a commission-only basis, and from that point on, I never looked back.”

That decision marked the beginning of a long and successful career in IT sales, spanning hardware, software, and professional services.

Transvault since day one

When talking about what excites him most about being part of Transvault, James reflects on just how closely connected he has been to the company’s journey over the years. “After a few moves early in my IT sales career, Essential Computing became home for many years,” he explains. “Initially, I was responsible for sales of NT Server monitoring and alerting software, but later I became part of the brainstorming group that planted the seeds for what eventually became Transvault.”

James was involved in some of the very first sales of Transvault Migrator, as it was known then (now Intelligent Migrator), while still working as a reseller through Essential Computing. “When I was approached by Transvault to take on the role of Channel Sales Manager, I jumped at the chance,” he says. “I actually moved from one company to the other on the very same day.”

Looking back over the last two decades, James says it’s been incredibly rewarding to watch both the company and the industry evolve. “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come,” he reflects. “From those early days and ideas to becoming a trusted name in the industry, it’s been a fantastic journey to be part of.”

Values That Run Through Everything

For James, his role aligns closely with the values that matter most to him. “I consider myself to have very strong ethics and a sense of doing the right thing,” he says. “That’s something very much shared and encouraged at Transvault.”

Family is also a huge part of his life. “I’m a family man, and my children and grandchildren absolutely rock my world,” he says warmly. “Transvault has always supported and encouraged those family values, which means a lot to me.”

Building the Partner Network

Since joining the team, James has continued to grow professionally, particularly in developing and supporting Transvault’s partner network. “Working at Transvault, where there’s such a strong focus on the channel, has really helped me develop my skills in partner management and support,” he explains.

His days tend to start early. “I’m often awake around 5am,” he says. “The first thing I do is check whether any of our partners in Australia need support.”

Life Outside of Work

Health and wellbeing are also an important part of his routine. Over the last year, he has made time for regular walks, gym sessions, and Pilates classes each week. Outside of work, he also enjoys clay pigeon shooting and has recently taken up rifle target shooting competitively.

Excited by What Comes Next

Looking ahead, James is especially excited by the rapid growth of AI and the possibilities it brings. “AI is still completely mind-blowing to me,” he says. “The pace of change is incredible, and the possibilities are limited only by imagination. I’m already using AI models to help with my day-to-day work, and I’m excited to see where the technology goes next.”

His advice for anyone starting out in sales is simple but powerful: “Be honest and be real,” he says. “Don’t just list features without understanding what’s actually important to the customer.”

We’re proud to have James as part of the Transvault team. His experience, integrity, and two decades of dedication are a wonderful reflection of the relationships, values, and passion that have shaped Transvault over the last 20 years and will continue to drive us into the future.
