Team Spotlight – Ben Hayward’s Journey into Engineering
At Tranvault, we’re passionate about what we do, but that passion comes to life through the incredible people who make up our team. In this edition we are introducing Ben, whose journey with Transvault showcases dedication, curiosity, and a true passion for technology.
We caught up with Ben to learn more about his experience, what inspires him, and what excites him most about being part of the Transvault team.
Ben’s path into engineering began early. “All the men in my family have worked in various technical or engineering roles” he says. “I grew up around developers and engineers”. That environment naturally influenced his own curiosity for how things work and a passion for solving problems.
Moments That Shaped his Journey
As a child, Ben enjoyed testing the limits of how things were meant to be used, though not necessarily breaking them. “I was very much Sid from Toy Story growing up” he laughs. “Not so much destroying things but finding loopholes in the rules of a game or finding new uses for things.” That inventive curiosity eventually evolved into a career focused on testing software and improving how products work.
The Inspiration Behind His Work
Ben’s love for puzzles and problem solving has always been at the heart of his career. “It was a natural fit when I started my first IT support job way back in the mists of time”, he jokes. “Even if most of my time back then was spend disassembling printers and replacing computer parts for various offices”. That early hands-on experience gave him a deep appreciation for how technology functions and how to make it work better.
When asked what excites him most about being part of Transvault, Ben doesn’t hesitate: “Working on new and interesting products and helping to make sure they are the best they can possibly be”. His role allows him to dive deep into testing process and ensures that Transvaul’s software meets the highest standards before it reaches customers.
He adds with characteristic honesty, “No software is perfect, anyone who says their software has no bugs is lying to you.” For Ben, that challenge is what keeps his work engaging. “My role is to make sure that the software works” he says simply, “and that’s something I take great pride in.”
Since joining the team, Ben has discovered that even the most familiar technologies can hold surprises. “I’ve learned that emails are a lot more complicated than they have any right to be” he says with a grin.
A Day in Ben’s Life
Outside of work, Ben enjoys spending time on creative side projects that expand his knowledge and keep curiosity alive. “I have several pet projects and hobbies” he explains. “I like painting, writing, and I’ve recently started to figure out how to make a game using Godot.” These activities not only fuel his creativity but also help him bring fresh ideas to his professional work.
Ben is particularly optimistic about where Transvault is heading. “I think Transvault have identified a key growth area with our new product that we can capitalise on as an agile team, something that larger organisations will be much slower to respond to”.
Word of Wisdom
For those starting out in engineering, Ben’s advice is simple but powerful: “There is always more to learn, and you shouldn’t dismiss people’s ideas.”
When it comes to stories, Ben had plenty of favourites. “I don’t know if it’s my favourite book, but the one I’ve read the most is Dune” he says. “My favourite book series is The First Law by Joe Abercrombie. It’s nine books about horrible people being horrible to one another” he adds with a laugh.
We’re proud to have Ben as part of the Transvault team. His curiosity, creativity and commitment to quality make him an invaluable part of our success.
